Pure Choice and a 2nd position in Shell Eco-Marathon 2008

This years Shell Eco-marathon became an almighty success for the NTNU-students and Pure Choice. The team drove 729 kilometres with its hydrogen fuel cell car.
As main sponsor for the NTNU-team in the Shell Eco-Marathon 2008, Choice Hotels Scandinavia wishes to contribute to the development of new environmental technology. We have for quite a while focussed on utilisation and use of environmentally friendly alternatives and are seen as leaders when using pure or renewable energy. Choice was also among the first companies in Norway to get a hydrogen-powered car.

The Shell Eco-Marathon began in 1939 as the ”Shell Mileage Marathon” after a discussion amongst the employees in the Shell Oil research laboratory in Wood River, Illinois, about which car had the least fuel consumption per mile. Since the start the rules have been as simple as the concept: To see which car can drive the longest with the least fuel.

Today the European competition is held each year in France, on the racing circuit Nogaro Circuit and is a competition for school pupils and students. Several hundred teams from more than 20 different countries compete in two classes each year: Urban Concept and Prototype.
The first has to be a car for urban use; the last can be almost anything. The students themselves decide which kind of fuel they wish to use and the distances are calculated as the use of energy equivalent to 1 litre of Petrol. The record for the longest distance in the prototype class is 3836 achieved in 2005 and hydrogen was the fuel. In the Urban Concept class, the record today is 810 km achieved by a Danish team in 2006.

In addition to their second place, the NTNU students were well ahead of the 200 other teams with regard to safety and communication. The prices for safety and communication were awarded to Pure Choice and the Trondheim-students.
